What drives cold-storage demand in Nevada

Nevada is the driest U.S. state, with mostly desert and semi-arid climate and about 7 inches of rain a year on average. Summers are intensely hot in the south, with Las Vegas July highs near 106 F, and warm in Reno (about 92 F), with summer thunderstorms when monsoon moisture arrives. Northern Nevada and the Great Basin have long, fairly cold winters with Pacific storms bringing snow.

The hottest stretch runs june to September. The coldest runs december to February. Both extremes strain commercial refrigeration, and both bring calls for emergency cold storage.

Resorts, lodges, hospitals, and event operators rely on short-term refrigeration for busy seasons and breakdowns.

Weather and hazards

  • Heat wave (June to September): Las Vegas reaches 90 F or higher about 137 days a year, and the state's record high is 125 F at Laughlin in 1994. Extreme heat can overload refrigeration equipment and quickly spoil perishables, which often creates a need for temporary refrigerated trailers. Source
  • Flood (July to September (monsoon)): A July 8, 1999 monsoon storm flooded the Las Vegas Valley, damaging 353 homes and causing $20.5 million in public property damage; Henderson also gets monsoon flash flooding. Flash floods can damage kitchens and food storage and can create a need for temporary kitchens and warewashing. Source
  • Wildfire (July to October): The Davis Fire burned 5,824 acres in Washoe Valley south of Reno in September 2024, prompting evacuations of roughly 20,000 people; wildfire threatens about four in five homes in the Reno area. Evacuations and utility disruptions can leave food businesses without power or staff and can create demand for temporary cold storage and field kitchens for responders. Source
  • Earthquake (Year-round): A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck about 12 miles from Wells on February 21, 2008, causing significant damage in town, and a 2008 swarm near Reno reached magnitude 4.9. Earthquake damage can disrupt power and building systems, which can leave food businesses needing temporary cold storage. Source
  • Winter storm (November to March): Northern Nevada and the Great Basin have long, fairly cold winters; Ely has frost in every month and record lows near -30 F. Winter storms can close mountain passes on I-80 and disrupt deliveries and power to food businesses. Source

Power outages

  • NV Energy provides electric service to about 1.3 million customers in northern and southern Nevada, including the Las Vegas Valley. A utility outage in a large service area can leave many food businesses without refrigeration at once. Source
  • Las Vegas has about 137 days a year at or above 90 F, and July highs average around 106 F. Prolonged heat can strain refrigeration equipment and local power supply, which can make backup cold storage valuable. Source

Food and hospitality

  • About 40.8 million visitors came to Las Vegas in 2023, and the city ranks third among U.S. destinations for business conventions. Hotels, casinos and convention caterers have very large food-service operations that can need temporary kitchens, dishwashing and cold storage during peaks or equipment outages. Source
  • Tourism remains Nevada's largest employer, and legalized gambling helped make it a major destination. Hospitality-dependent food service concentrates demand for temporary kitchens and warewashing. Source
  • Henderson hosts a Kroger distribution center, and the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center, the largest industrial park in the U.S., hosts Walmart distribution among over a hundred companies. Distribution hubs can need overflow refrigerated storage. Source
  • North Las Vegas has warehouse distribution centers, including an 850,000-square-foot Amazon fulfillment center and a 715,000-square-foot Sephora distribution center that opened in 2019. Logistics growth in the Las Vegas Valley can create overflow cold-storage and workforce-food needs. Source
  • Yerington is nicknamed the Onion Capital of the West, and Winnemucca area farming includes potatoes. Onion and potato harvests can need seasonal cold storage. Source

Rules, agencies, and roads in Nevada

We rent to commercial and industrial customers only. Before you place temporary refrigeration or a temporary kitchen in Nevada, check local rules. The state agency to start with is Southern Nevada Health District (Clark County); Northern Nevada Public Health (Washoe County). For emergency information, see Nevada Office of Emergency Management / Homeland Security.

  • The Southern Nevada Health District lists Special Events, Mobile Vendor Application Process and Plan Review pages under Permits and Regulations, and also runs a restaurant inspection search and a food handler safety program. Temporary kitchens, mobile units and new setups in Clark County fall under the health district's permit, plan review and inspection processes. Source
  • Washoe County's food program pages redirect to Northern Nevada Public Health's Environmental Health Services food division, which handles food permits in the Reno-Sparks area. Customers in Reno and Sparks need to work with Northern Nevada Public Health on permits for temporary or mobile food service. Source
  • Federal CDC guidance says a closed refrigerator keeps food safe about 4 hours without power and a full freezer about 48 hours, and that perishable food above 40 F should be discarded. These time limits are why food businesses often look for backup refrigeration quickly during an extended outage. Source

Main roads

  • I-15: About 124 miles in Nevada from Primm through Las Vegas and North Las Vegas to the Arizona line near Mesquite.
  • I-80: About 410 miles from the California line near Verdi through Reno, Sparks, Lovelock, Winnemucca, Carlin, Elko and Wells to West Wendover; Pequop Summit (6,967 ft) is the highest point.
  • I-11: Serves Henderson along with I-215 and Lake Mead Parkway.
  • US-95: Serves Winnemucca and connects with US 50 at Fallon.
  • US-50: The Loneliest Road in America stretch ends at Ely; US 50 also runs through Fallon.
  • US-93: Meets I-80 at Wells and carries the Lincoln Highway into Ely.

Events that raise demand

  • Consumer Electronics Show (CES) (Early January): CES is an annual trade show at the Las Vegas Convention Center that drew about 141,000 attendees in 2025. Large convention crowds can raise demand for temporary catering kitchens, cold storage and warewashing.
  • Hot August Nights (August): A classic car festival in Reno and Virginia City held in early August for vehicles built before 1979. Festival food vendors can use temporary refrigeration, kitchens and dishwashing.
  • Great Reno Balloon Race (September): Held the weekend after Labor Day since 1982, drawing an average crowd of about 140,000. Large outdoor crowds can need temporary food service and cold storage.
  • Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off (Late summer): The Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off is a notable annual event in Sparks, with Victorian Square hosting many open-air events. Cook-off vendors can use temporary refrigeration, kitchens and warewashing.
