What drives cold-storage demand in Idaho

Summers are hot and dry: Boise averages a July high near 93F with about 36 percent relative humidity, and Idaho Falls about 87F. Winters are cold, with Idaho Falls averaging a January low near 12F, and the state's record low is -60F (1943). The state record high is 118F at Orofino (1934).

The hottest stretch runs june to August. The coldest runs december to February. Both extremes strain commercial refrigeration, and both bring calls for emergency cold storage.

Resorts, lodges, hospitals, and event operators rely on short-term refrigeration for busy seasons and breakdowns.

Weather and hazards

  • Wildfire (June to September (peaks July and August)): The 2024 season burned nearly 826,000 acres by October 1, including the 187,185-acre Paddock Fire in Gem, Payette and Washington counties and the 79,260-acre Red Rock Fire in Lemhi County. Large fires can cut power, close roads and bring in firefighting crews, which can create demand for emergency cold storage and camp-style temporary kitchens. Source
  • Heat wave (June to August): Boise reaches 100F on about nine days in a typical year and 90F on about 55 days; its record high is 111F. Extreme heat can overload refrigeration and increase spoilage risk when equipment fails. Source
  • Winter storm (November to March): Idaho Falls averages about 37 inches of snow with a record low of -51F, and McCall's airport averages about 132 inches of snow a year. Heavy snow and deep cold can cut power and delay refrigerated deliveries to mountain and eastern Idaho towns. Source
  • Earthquake (year-round): The 1983 Borah Peak earthquake in central Idaho caused two fatalities. A significant quake can cut power and damage kitchens and cold rooms. Source
  • Flood (spring snowmelt): Bonners Ferry was originally built on stilts to avoid spring floods of the Kootenai River; Libby Dam, completed in 1975, lessened the flood threat. River flooding can isolate towns and take out kitchens and cold rooms. Source

Power outages

  • Idaho Power serves southern Idaho and eastern Oregon across about 24,000 square miles, operates 17 hydroelectric dams, and drew about 37 percent of the electricity it sold in 2023 from hydro. A hydro-heavy grid is sensitive to snowpack and drought, and heat waves can strain supply. Source
  • Rocky Mountain Power serves southeastern Idaho, including Montpelier, Preston, St. Anthony, Rexburg and Lava Hot Springs. Storm or wildfire events affecting this utility can disrupt many small eastern Idaho towns at once. Source
  • The September 2020 windstorm affected Rocky Mountain Power customers in Utah, Idaho and Wyoming, and the utility aimed to restore nearly all by September 10, 2020. Multi-day wind outages can spoil refrigerated inventory. Source

Food and hospitality

  • Idaho is the top potato-producing state, with almost one-third of the nation's potatoes grown on the Snake River Plain. Potato storage, processing and shipping drive large seasonal demand for temperature-controlled space. Source
  • Gooding is home to what is described as the world's largest barrel cheese factory (Glanbia), with a capacity of 120,000 metric tons a year. Cheese and dairy plants rely on constant refrigeration and may need temporary capacity during outages or surges. Source
  • The Magic Valley region's main commodities include rainbow trout, beans, sugar beets, corn and potatoes, and dairy is significant in Jerome and Gooding counties. Harvest and dairy operations can need extra refrigerated trailer space. Source
  • Albertsons, J.R. Simplot and Lamb Weston are headquartered in Boise, and the United Potato Growers of Idaho is headquartered in Idaho Falls. Grocery and food-processing headquarters tie the state to large cold-chain operations. Source
  • Idaho tourism includes camping, hunting, fishing, whitewater rafting and skiing, with Sun Valley's first chairlift installed in 1936. Resort and outdoor tourism creates seasonal restaurant and catering demand. Source

Rules, agencies, and roads in Idaho

We rent to commercial and industrial customers only. Before you place temporary refrigeration or a temporary kitchen in Idaho, check local rules. The state agency to start with is Idaho Department of Health and Welfare. For emergency information, see Idaho Office of Emergency Management.

  • Local public health districts handle food establishment permitting; for example, Central District Health (Ada, Boise, Elmore and Valley counties) has a Food Establishments and Food Safety licensing section. A temporary kitchen or mobile unit generally needs to be cleared with the district health office covering the site. Source
  • CDC guidance says a closed refrigerator keeps food safe for up to 4 hours without power and a full freezer for about 48 hours; after that, perishable food such as meat, fish, eggs and milk should be discarded. Idaho-specific outage guidance could not be opened. The 4-hour window is why operators often need replacement refrigeration quickly after a power loss. Source

Main roads

  • I-84: Runs about 276 miles from the Oregon line through Caldwell, Nampa, Boise and the Magic Valley to Utah; the highest point is Sweetzer Summit (5,522 ft), and I-84 at I-184 in Boise carried about 139,000 vehicles a day in 2018.
  • I-15: Runs 196 miles through eastern Idaho from the Utah line through Pocatello, Blackfoot and Idaho Falls to Monida Pass at the Montana line.
  • I-86: Meets I-84 near Declo and carries US-30 toward American Falls and Pocatello.
  • US-95: About 539 miles from Oregon to the Canadian border; the only road linking the Panhandle with the rest of Idaho; the White Bird Grade climbs about 2,700 feet in seven miles.
  • US-20: Runs through Idaho Falls and St. Anthony.
  • US-30: Intersects US-89 in Montpelier and once ran through Rupert before I-84 was built.
  • US-91: Runs north-south through Preston as State Street and through Idaho Falls.

Events that raise demand

  • Western Idaho Fair (August (third Friday to fourth Sunday)): A fair dating to 1897, held at Expo Idaho on Chinden Boulevard near Boise. A large fair needs many temporary food vendors with cold storage and warewashing.
  • Snake River Stampede (June (moved from July in 2025)): A five-day PRCA rodeo in Nampa, recognized as one of the top twelve professional rodeos, at the Ford Idaho Center. Rodeo crowds can need temporary concession kitchens and cold storage.
  • Treefort Music Fest (late March): A five-day Boise festival that featured over 500 artists in 2026. Multi-venue festivals bring food vendors who can need temporary refrigeration and warewashing.
  • McCall Winter Carnival (winter): A 10-day carnival that can draw over 60,000 people to McCall, with ice sculptures, parades and fireworks. A crowd many times a town's size can need temporary kitchens and cold storage.
  • Grangeville Border Days (July 4 weekend): Features the state's oldest rodeo, parades and the world's largest egg toss. A holiday rodeo weekend can create temporary food service demand.
